The monthly Visa Bulletin provided by the U.S. Department of State (link) summarizes the availability of immigrant numbers during each month. It also provides updated monthly numbers of the list of applicants and the “current” priority date (PD) for those applicants. It is important to check the Visa Bulletin often if you have a pending priority date for an estimate of when a visa would become available. If you are living in the U.S., USCIS provides us with instructions on which chart to use depending on your case here. If you are outside of the U.S., you can use the Department of State website to view the Visa Bulletin Chart B, “Dates for Filing,” which lets you know when the National Visa Center (NVC) can begin processing your case, and Chart A, “Final Action Dates,” which lets you know when the immigrant visa may be issued if approved.
